Faculty and staff at private colleges in Northern California have been uniting for change in SEIU Local 1021 since 2014.

SEIU Local 1021 has represented staff at local community colleges across Northern California for decades. Starting with the Adjunct Action campaign in 2014, non-tenured faculty (known by many names, including “adjunct faculty,” “visiting faculty,” “lecturers,” etc.) at several Bay Area private colleges began organizing with SEIU 1021 to win contracts giving them some basic job security and living wages.

The organizing continued with the Faculty Forward campaign, as tenured faculty at some schools wanted to join as well. Nationwide, roughly 90% of union growth in higher education has been through SEIU affiliates, thanks to the national Faculty Forward campaign.

And in the past couple of years, staff at some of these colleges have also begun joining SEIU 1021, for the same reasons as their colleagues in the faculty: job security, livable wages, a voice in their workplace.

Currently, SEIU 1021 unites:

  • California College of the Arts (adjunct faculty and staff)

  • Dominican University (adjunct faculty)

  • Mills College at Northeastern University (adjunct faculty and staff)

  • Saint Mary’s College (adjunct faculty)

  • Santa Clara University (adjunct faculty)
